Common Questions

Who is eligible to protest their property taxes?

Any property owner in Texas can protest their appraised value. Whether you own a home, rental property, or commercial real estate, you have the right to challenge your appraisal district's assessed value every year.

What does JC Tax Group charge?

Our fee is 30% of your property tax savings, calculated as the reduction in your appraised value multiplied by your applicable tax rate at the time of filing. For homestead properties, the maximum fee is $350. There are no upfront fees. If we don't achieve a reduction, you owe nothing. Payment is invoiced after your results are finalized.

When is the deadline to file a protest in Texas?

The standard protest deadline in Texas is May 15th (or 30 days after your Notice of Appraised Value is delivered, whichever is later). Deadlines can vary slightly by county. Once you sign up with us, we handle all deadline tracking and filing.

What is the engagement agreement I sign up to get started?

When you submit your information online, you'll review and electronically agree to our engagement agreement. This document authorizes JC Tax Group to represent you before your appraisal district and the Appraisal Review Board, and spells out our 30% contingency fee. It's straightforward and transparent, and no payment is due at the time of signing.

How long does the protest process take?

The process typically runs from the time of filing (spring) through summer. Many protests are settled informally with the appraisal district; others proceed to an Appraisal Review Board hearing. We keep you informed every step of the way.

Do I need to attend any hearings?

No. JC Tax Group handles all hearings on your behalf. You simply sign the engagement agreement and let us go to work. Most of our clients never have to attend anything.

Can you help with both residential and commercial properties?

Yes. We protest both residential and commercial properties. Whether it's your primary home, an investment property, or a business location, our team has the experience to build a strong case.

Can you help with homestead or senior exemptions — and can you still protest if I already have one?

Yes on both counts. If you don't yet have a homestead exemption, senior (over-65) exemption, or disability exemption you may qualify for, JC Tax Group can help you identify and pursue those — they can meaningfully reduce your taxable value every year. And if you already have an exemption, that does not prevent you from protesting your appraised value. Exemptions reduce your tax bill by a fixed amount, but if your appraisal is still above market value, there are additional savings to be found. A successful protest benefits you on top of any exemption you already receive.

9. Cancellation. Either party may cancel this Agreement at any time upon thirty (30) days prior written notice to the other party. If work has been performed prior to receipt of the written notice of cancellation, Client shall owe the fees incurred up to that point even if services are not completed and the case is not settled.

10. Legal Expenses. In the event it becomes necessary for the Firm to retain an attorney to enforce the provisions of this Agreement, the Firm shall be entitled to recover from Client reasonable attorney's fees, prejudgment interest, and all other costs of collection. Attorney's fees shall in no event be less than 25% of the amount recovered.

11. Entire Agreement; Severability; Binding Effect. This instrument contains the entire agreement and understanding of the parties with respect to the subject matter herein. All prior negotiations and agreements, oral or written, are superseded by this Agreement. This Agreement may not be modified or amended except by a written instrument executed by both parties. If any provision of this Agreement is held invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions shall continue in full force and effect. This Agreement shall be binding upon the parties, their heirs, administrators, executors, successors, and assigns.

The Attorney
Behind Your Case

Dennis "John" Collins is a licensed attorney in the State of Texas and the owner of JC Tax Group, LLC. John built this practice around a straightforward conviction: that property owners in North Texas deserve genuine, hands-on representation in the protest process — not just a form filed on their behalf by a high-volume service.

What sets John apart is a rare combination of legal expertise and deep real estate experience. He understands how properties are valued, what conditions affect market price, and how to present compelling evidence before an Appraisal Review Board — because he has worked in and around real estate long enough to know exactly what appraisers look for and where they get it wrong.

While JC Tax Group offers broader legal and tax services, property tax protest is the firm's primary specialty. John stays current on Tarrant County and North Texas market trends, comparable sales data, and the evolving standards appraisal districts apply — knowledge that translates directly into better results for clients.

JC Tax Group serves Tarrant County and regularly represents property owners in Denton, Dallas, Parker, Wise, Collin, and other surrounding North Texas counties.

Rooted in the Keller Community

John and his wife are proud residents of Keller, Texas, where they are raising their three children and are deeply involved in the community. The Collins family are enthusiastic supporters of the Keller Indians. You will find them cheering in the stands on Friday nights. When John works to lower your property taxes, he is working for the same community he calls home.
